Hypoallergenic Diet Trial to Rule out Food Allergy

Starting the Trial
  • slowly transition your pet onto one of the approved hypoallergenic diets over 5 to 7 days by gradually adding 1/4 of the new food in with the old.

  • Once your pet is only on this diet, mark your calendar as DAY 1 of the trial to rule out food allergy.

  • Your pet should be on this diet and nothing else (no non-hypo treats, human food, etc) for 8 weeks - find hypoallergenic treats here

Monitoring Progress
  • If your pet has had significant improvement (itching, chronic ear infections, etc), we will re-introduce the old food to see if itching resumes.

  • Transition your pet back to their old food over 5-7 days with the 1/4 at a time method. Keep them on this diet for 2 weeks.

  • Exposure to an allergen can cause itching within 12 hours, but we need 2 weeks to be sure.

  • Make sure to make each transition slowly to avoid GI upset.

  • Call our office if you near the end of the trial and have not noticed improvement in your pet's symptoms.
